Plot Summary:In a village by the sea live Kelly and Irene, lovers. Irene, however, is attracted to a big sea captain named Pierson. She leaves Kelly in pursuit of romance and marries Pierson. At the time the story opens, Kelly is one of the most dependable members of the secret service. He and Daniels are friends. The authorities are very much perplexed by the fact that great quantities of opium are being smuggled into this country. Kelly and Daniels are assigned to the work of running down the case, and while making a trip through Chinatown, become mixed up in a tong war. In the attack the two become separated, and Kelly is seriously wounded. The Princess Poppy sees a white man fall and has him brought to her apartment. When Kelly revives he finds himself in an oriental apartment, and recognizes the owner of it as his old sweetheart, Irene. Daniels, searching for his partner, has a fight with Chung Wee, and the Chinaman leaves his coat, which Daniels searches. He finds some documents which cause him to believe the \"Empress of Asia,\" which is due in a few days, is carrying contraband, and secures permission from the inspector to thoroughly search the vessel. Kelly, being alone with Irene, finds his old love returning and pleads with her to leave the life she is living and go with him. She has become a victim of the opium habit, and her supply being very low, her nerves are in a sad condition. She pleads with him to wait until after the \"Empress of Asia\" arrives, when she will give him a definite answer. Kelly leaves her and returns to his apartment. He refuses any explanation to Daniels. The latter then tells him of securing permission to search the incoming steamer, and that she will dock the next day. Kelly, realizing what a blow this will be to the girl, warns her of the search. She sends one of her trusted servants, Chung Wee, with a note of warning to Pierson. Kelly then returns and accompanies his partner on a final search of the vessel. They are unable to find anything, and Kelly, while standing near a case of walnuts in the captain's cabin, notices a picture of Irene. A close examination of the captain proves him to be Pierson. His jealousy is aroused, and he starts to attack him, but his cooler self prevails, and, instead, he hurries to the princess' apartment. Daniels, unable to find anything wrong, is forced to leave, hut, seeing Chung Wee hanging around outside, determines to follow him. Pierson takes the case of walnuts and hastens to the Princess' apartment. Kelly and Irene are in the midst of a scene when they hear Pierson enter. The woman hides Kelly in a closet. Pierson discovers the latter's hat after he has been in the room a short while and begins to look for him. Irene, frantic for her drug, breaks open one of the walnuts, which is full of contraband opium. Daniels follows the Chinaman to the Princess' apartment and looks through the keyhole just as the woman opens the walnut. He calls for help to raid the place, and returns to the room just as Pierson has discovered Kelly. The two have a fight and Kelly is about to be killed when Daniels bursts in the room and kills Pierson. The police come in and take charge of the opium. Pierson, before dying, exonerates the woman of all blame in his wrong-doing, claiming that he had forced her to do his work. The girl goes to Kelly who confesses his love for her. As the story closes Kelly and the girl return to their childhood home and hand in hand make new plans for the future.
